SSL/TLS Certificates

What is SSL?

SSL or TLS is a protocol for encrypted information exchange between server and client.
The SSL/TLS protocol is established through an SSL/TLS certificate. Certificates have a dual role - the first is authentication and the second is encryption.
Authentication means that an independent third party (so-called Certificate Authority) has verified the data contained in the SSL certificate, assuring users that the server, usually a web server, is authentic.
Encryption means that the data exchanged in the session between the browser and the server are encrypted and can only be read by those for whom the information is intended.
Types of SSL certificates
SSL certificate provide authentication, they confirm the identity of the owner of the server. Information about the owner of the server is checked and verified by the CA that issues the certificate.
We distinguish types of SSL certificates depending on what information the CA checks.
There are certificates that only guarantee domain validity (DV - domain validation), that is, that the site owner has the right to use the domain for which the certificate was issued.
Higher level of authenthication provides OV - Organization Validation certificate. OV authenticates domain ownership plus the organization’s information included in the certificate (name, city, state, and country).
The highest level of authentication is provided by EV - Extended Validation certificates. EV represents the best SSL Certificate. It validates domain ownership and organizational information, along with the legal existence of the organization, and certifies its awareness and approval of the request.
Due to the different level of checks and guarantees given by the CA for different types of certificates, their prices differ.
